Yvonne Gray
Yvonne Gray is an Orewa based painter and print-maker who conveys impressions of places and emotions in her art, inviting viewers to connect with her on her visual journey. Her keen eye for observation means that she’s able to capture the feeling of a stormy day, the start of spring, a meander through a field or that hint of sunlight on water. After more than twenty years in her practice, she can now use a variety of approaches in order to manipulate paint and convey her ideas. Deliberate and unusual colour combinations are sometimes used along with tools such as palette knives, brushes, wedges, cardboard, water sprays, sticks, in fact anything at hand can be used to make interesting marks. Her artwork is multi-layered, exploring colour or monochromic themes with dynamic movement. There are often figures, words, scribbles or a tiny hint of colour in an unexpected place to draw a viewer closer. In 2021, Yvonne won the Merit Prize for Painting in the Estuary Arts Member's Merit Awards and has been a finalist in the 2023 Hibiscus & Bays Art Awards.
